The farm is blessed with deep well drained soils of moderate fertility. The land is relatively flat with less than 2% slopes. The soils are sandy loam. The 2 major soil types are known as Sassafras sandy loam and Woodstown sandy loam. Small stones and gravel of varying amount exist throughout the vineyard. The soils in some areas are similar to those found in Bordeaux (Graves in particular). We adjust soil pH prior to initial planting and maintain it at appropriate levels subsequently. We regularly monitor vine growth and obtain soil and petiole analysis. Surprisingly little nitrogen or other nutrients are required for healthy but not too vigorous growth. |
